Description
The primary focus of the role of the nurse is to provide competent and quality care based on patient needs and as a member of a clinical care team. The care provided by nurses is costly - for the patient and the health care system. In our present national health care state all members of the health care team, including clinical nurses should have an awareness of the relationship of cost, quality and outcomes. Quality care that best serves the patient needs is necessary for better outcomes. This session will look at current evidence of cost of nursing care in NICUs and the association of nursing characteristics with cost and quality of care and patient outcomes and will review a recent indepth study evaluating these relationships at a large NICU within a Children's Hospital.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the variability of nursing care costs across infants
- Evaluate the characteristics of nurses and subsequent variability in cost of nurses assigned to each infant
- Describe nursing acuity/patient demand across the neonatal patient population
